Why You Need Home Business Insurance ?

It is far too risky to run your home based business without sufficient insurance coverage. Should any type of disaster strike, you might be legally required to pay for all the associated costs out of your own pocket if you do not have proper home business insurance. As an entrepreneur you could be held responsible any number of things inside your home, inside the homes of your clients or in your vehicle, depending on your type of business:

  • Injury or disability to yourself, employees or customers
  • Damage to property (yours or another’s)
  • Damaged or destroyed office contents (computers, equipment, furniture, records, etc.)
  • Portable equipment (laptop computers, phones, etc.) damaged or destroyed outside the home based business.
  • Business interruption and loss of income.
  • Professional liability, including services, malpractice, errors and omissions.
  • Legal expenses

Insurance is Essential

Fires, natural disasters and theft could cost your business dearly. Plus good health care insurance, disability and life insurance for your own family are essential. Home business insurance policies can provide you and your family with the security you need to be able to handle a calamity. Too many home business owners erroneously believe that their current homeowners (or renters) and vehicle insurance policies also cover their home business activities. Be informed about what your current policies do and do not cover. It is even possible that your current homeowners insurance is invalidated by your running a business from your home.

Investigate legal insurance obligations in your area. If you have employees, most places require a minimum amount of liability insurance. Also consult a tax accountant and check requirements and options with home based business associations, trade associations, the Better Business Bureau and your local Chamber of Commerce.

Variety

The good news is that there are many flexible types of insurance policies for home based businesses. For the self-employed, insurance premiums for your vehicle and health insurance may even be tax deductible. Your insurer can tell you what insurance coverage exists with your current policies and help you prioritize your needs to see what kind of home based business insurance you should add. Often a customized policy can be put together to meet your specific needs. One disaster could wipe out your entire business and all the hard work you put into it. Do not take that gamble; get the home business insurance that you need.
